Acoustic Enclosure, Container or Canopy: Which Housing for a Diesel Generator?

In Short

The right housing depends on the site. A canopy is the compact hood that comes with the set, an acoustic enclosure is a walk-in box built to a noise target, and a container is an enclosure in shipping dimensions that travels easily. Noise limit, space, access, transport and cost decide which one fits a diesel generator.

A diesel generator can stand in a plant room, under a canopy, inside an acoustic enclosure or in a soundproof container, and each is right somewhere. The canopy is the generator maker's compact hood; the acoustic enclosure is a walk-in box built for a sound level; the container is an enclosure in ISO dimensions that travels and stacks; the plant room is the building itself with its louvres and attenuators. This guide compares them on the points that decide: noise, size, access, transport and cost.

Canopy: Compact and Close to the Set

A canopy is a steel hood bolted to the generator skid, with the radiator discharging through one end and the air entering through louvres on the sides or the other end. It is the smallest and cheapest housing, is shipped with the set, and gives weather protection and a moderate sound reduction. Service is through side doors; a canopy is not walked into.

It suits smaller standby sets on sites without a tight sound limit: a factory yard, a telecom site, a building roof. Its limits are the sound level it can reach, the service access on large sets and the integration of fuel, exhaust and switchgear, which usually stay outside.

Acoustic Enclosure: Built for a Sound Level

An acoustic enclosure is a walk-in housing designed around the set with a target sound level, stated together with the distance it applies to. The air passes through silencers at the inlet and the outlet, the walls are lined, and the exhaust silencer matches the enclosure. Doors and a personnel door give service access all round.

It is the choice where the sound limit decides: urban and residential surroundings, hospitals, offices, data centers. It is larger than a canopy because the silencers need length, and heavier because of the lining, and it is built to a specification rather than taken from a catalogue.

Container: The Enclosure That Travels

A genset container is an acoustic or weatherproof enclosure built to ISO container dimensions with corner castings and, when it must travel as freight, CSC plates. It is lifted with standard spreaders, moves by truck, rail and ship without special permits, and can be stacked or placed on a container chassis. Inside it is a complete power plant: set, fuel tank, exhaust, switchgear, lighting, fire detection.

It suits rental fleets, remote sites, temporary power, data centers that deploy capacity in blocks and anyone who wants the package factory-tested and commissioned once. Its constraint is the fixed envelope: a large set fills most of a container, and the silencers, the tank and the switchgear compete for the remaining length.

Plant Room: The Building Does the Work

An open set in a plant room relies on the building: inlet and outlet louvres with attenuators, a duct from the radiator to the wall, an exhaust through the roof, a fuel room, and the building's fire compartment. It gives the best access and the longest life for the equipment, and it is the natural choice for a permanent installation in a new building.

The costs are in the building - openings, attenuators, ducts, fire rating - and in the coordination between the civil, mechanical and electrical trades. Where the building exists and the generator is added later, an enclosure outside is often the faster and cheaper route.

  • Canopy: smallest, cheapest, ships with the set; moderate sound reduction, limited integration
  • Acoustic enclosure: built for a sound level; walk-in service; larger and specified per project
  • Container: ISO dimensions, travels and stacks, complete plant in one box; fixed envelope
  • Plant room: best access and life; building works, attenuators and coordination

In short

  • No sound limit, small set, outdoor: canopy
  • Sound limit at the fence or a neighbour: acoustic enclosure
  • Transport, rental, phased deployment, remote site: container
  • New permanent building with a generator room planned: plant room
  • Several sets in a bank: containers or a row of enclosures with a common fuel system
  • AXON builds acoustic enclosures and containers; canopies come with the set

What to send with an enquiry

  • Generator set make, model, rating and dimensions
  • Sound limit in dB(A), the distance and the measurement point
  • Where the unit stands and how it gets there: crane, truck, sea freight
  • Service access needed and the maintenance regime
  • Fuel autonomy and whether the tank is inside or outside
  • Site ambient, altitude and corrosion class

Questions we are often asked

How much quieter is an acoustic enclosure than a canopy?

A good deal quieter. A canopy takes the edge off a bare set; an acoustic enclosure is built for a stated sound level, and special designs go lower still. The result depends on the set and on the sound limit of the site.

Can a canopy set be put into a container later?

Yes, and it is common: the canopy is removed or kept as an inner skin, and the container provides the acoustic treatment, the fuel system and the switchgear. The airflow path and the exhaust are reworked for the container.

Is a container always a standard ISO size?

Standard sizes are the ones that travel as freight. Enclosures in other lengths are built when the set and its silencers need them; they are then moved as oversize loads and do not stack.

Which housing lasts longest?

The plant room protects the equipment best. Among outdoor housings, a galvanised and painted container or enclosure built for the site's corrosion class lasts as long as the set; a canopy is the lightest construction.

Who supplies the housing - the generator maker or an enclosure builder?

Canopies come from the generator maker. Acoustic enclosures and containers are built by enclosure specialists around the set the customer chooses; AXON builds them for any make.
