Generator Set Containers and Enclosures

After it leaves the engine maker, a generator set still needs a place to stand, a roof, a fuel supply, air to breathe and a way to keep its noise in. AXON builds that enclosure around diesel and gas generator sets and integrates the systems that make the set work as one package.

AXON is not a generating set manufacturer. The engine and alternator are either selected from independent suppliers as part of the project, or supplied by the customer and shipped to us for containerisation.

Purpose-built steel or a converted ISO container

Most of our containers are purpose-built: a structural steel frame, steel cladding and a bunded floor that keeps any oil, coolant or fuel leak inside the enclosure. The dimensions follow the generator set and the space needed to service it, not the other way round.

Where a project wants the handling of a standard box, the enclosure can be built from an ISO shipping container. That brings corner castings, standard lifting and a size every port and haulier knows, with less freedom in the internal layout.

Noise is designed to a number

A "silent" or "sound-attenuated" label says very little. We work to a sound level in dB(A) at a stated distance, because that is what the site permit or the neighbour will measure. The enclosure lining, the attenuated air openings and the exhaust silencer are then chosen together to reach it.

Ask for the target early. A limit at 1 m, at 7 m or at the site boundary leads to quite different enclosures.

What goes into the package

A container is rarely just a box. Depending on the project, the package can include:

  • Radiator and ventilation, with air inlet and outlet silencers
  • Exhaust piping and silencers, and SCR where emission limits ask for it
  • A belly tank or day tank, fuel transfer and fuel polishing
  • Auxiliary MCC cabinet, circuit breaker panel, lighting and small power
  • Fire protection, access platforms and stairs

With one supplier for all of it, the air path, the exhaust route, the fuel connections and the cable entries are drawn and built together, and there is one set of interfaces to check at the factory test.

What AXON supplies

  • Containers and acoustic enclosures for diesel and gas generator sets
  • Purpose-built steel enclosures or converted ISO containers
  • Integration of a generator set supplied by the customer or selected by AXON
  • Air inlet and outlet silencers, exhaust systems and SCR
  • Belly tanks, day tanks and fuel polishing
  • Auxiliary MCC cabinets and circuit breaker panels

What to send with an enquiry

  • Generator set make and model, or the engine and alternator data
  • Duty: standby, prime or continuous
  • Sound limit in dB(A) and the distance it applies to
  • Site ambient temperature, altitude, and whether the site is coastal or dusty
  • Fuel autonomy expected from the tank in or under the container
  • Emission limits at the site, if any
  • Transport limits: road, sea, crane capacity on site

Questions we are often asked

Do you supply the generator set as well?

We are not a generator set manufacturer. The engine and alternator can be selected by AXON from independent suppliers as part of the scope, or you supply them and we containerise and integrate them.

Purpose-built enclosure or ISO container - which is better?

It depends on the size of the set, the layout and how the unit travels. A purpose-built enclosure fits the set and its service space; an ISO container is easier to ship and handle as a standard unit. We recommend one after seeing the set and the site.

Can the container meet a specific noise limit?

Yes. The enclosure is designed against a stated dB(A) level at a defined distance. Send the limit and where it is measured.

Can the fuel be stored in the container?

Yes. A belly tank under the set or a day tank inside the enclosure can be included, sized for the autonomy the project asks for.
