What Is Fuel Polishing and Why Do Standby Generators Need It?

In Short

Fuel polishing is a system that circulates stored diesel through filtration to remove water and particles and returns it clean to the tank. Standby generators need it because their fuel sits unused for long periods and degrades, which can block filters and stop the engine on the day the grid fails.

A standby generator spends most of its life waiting. Its fuel waits with it - for months, often for years - and diesel does not wait well. Water condenses in the tank, microbes grow at the water-fuel interface, the fuel oxidises and drops sediment, and on the day the grid fails the engine draws a cloudy mixture through filters that block within hours. Fuel polishing is the answer: a system that draws the fuel from the tank, removes water and particles, and returns it, on a schedule, so that the tank is clean on the day it matters.

Why Stored Diesel Degrades

Three things happen in a tank that stands. Water enters as condensation when the tank breathes with the temperature, and as free water in deliveries; it settles at the bottom, where the engine suction usually is. Microbes - bacteria and fungi - live in the water and feed on the fuel, forming the slime known as diesel bug that blocks filters and corrodes the tank. And the fuel itself oxidises and polymerises, forming gums and sediment, faster in warm tanks and faster still in modern fuels with biodiesel content, which also attract water.

None of this shows while the set is idle. It shows at the monthly test run, when the filters clog, or at the real outage, when the set starts, runs for a while and stops.

How a Fuel Polishing System Works

A polishing system is a pump, a set of filters and a controller mounted on a skid beside the tank. The pump draws fuel from the lowest point of the tank - where the water and the sediment are - passes it through a water separator and filters, and returns it to the tank at another point so that the contents are turned over. Many systems add a biocide dosing point and a water sensor that raises an alarm when the separator fills.

The controller runs the system on a timer and keeps the tank turning over regularly. The system is matched to the tank volume, and on large installations it serves several tanks through a valve manifold.

When It Is Worth Installing

For a standby set with a small belly tank that is refilled often, fuel polishing is rarely needed; the fuel does not stand long enough. For bulk tanks that hold days of autonomy and are topped up rather than emptied - data centers, hospitals, telecom hubs, water works - it is close to mandatory, and operators of critical sites write it into their standards together with regular fuel sampling and testing to the diesel fuel standard.

Fuel polishing does not replace good practice: tanks with a sloped bottom and a drain, deliveries checked for water, tanks kept full to reduce condensation, additives for long storage, and a test run under load every month. It makes the practice reliable. AXON supplies fuel polishing systems matched to the tank and the site, as skids or built into the fuel system of a container, with the pumps, filters, controls and alarms the installation needs.

In short

  • Stored diesel collects water, grows microbes and drops sediment
  • The damage shows when the set must run: blocked filters, stalls, injector wear
  • A polishing system draws, filters, separates water and returns the fuel on a timer
  • Matched to the tank volume; several tanks through a manifold
  • Needed for bulk tanks that stand for months; rarely for small, often refilled belly tanks
  • AXON builds polishing skids and fuel systems for any generator installation

What to send with an enquiry

  • Tank volumes and the number of tanks
  • Fuel type and the typical storage time
  • Site layout: distance from the skid to the tanks
  • Power supply available for the skid
  • Alarm and monitoring interface required
  • Whether the system is to be built into a container or stand alone

Questions we are often asked

How often should fuel be polished?

Permanent systems run on a timer so that the tank turns over regularly; portable services polish a tank at intervals. Sampling and testing tell whether the interval is right.

Does fuel polishing remove the diesel bug?

It removes the water the microbes live in and filters out the slime they produce; a biocide dose kills what remains. Without removing the water the bug returns.

Can an existing tank be fitted with a polishing system?

Yes. The skid connects to the tank's drain or a new suction at the low point and to a return at the far end; most tanks can be retrofitted without emptying them.

What is the difference between fuel polishing and the engine's filters?

The engine filters protect the engine from what reaches it and clog when the tank is dirty. Polishing cleans the tank itself, so that the engine filters see clean fuel and last.

Is it needed with a belly tank?

Rarely, if the tank is small and refilled regularly. A large belly tank that is refilled only rarely may still benefit, especially in a warm climate.
